Samsung enters the 8K TV game, set to go on sale in September

We live in an age where 4K TVs no longer require you to get a second mortgage on your house to buy them. You know what that means? It’s time for the 8K revolution! At IFA 2018 Samsung announced its first commercial 8K TV, the Q900R.

Samsung’s latest envy-inducing television will be available in 65-inch, 75-inch, 82-inch, and 85-inch sizes. It’s capable of a peak brightness of 4,000 nits and supports the Amazon and Samsung backed HDR10+ format. The Q900R will go on sale in select markets at September’s end, though we have no official details on when or where just yet. We also have no idea how much it will cost, but safe to say it won’t come cheap.

Probably the biggest question on any would-be buyers mind is even there will even be anything to watch with it, considering even 4K content is still semi-limited. The answer is not really, but the good news is that the Q900R features 8K AI Upscaling that is said to use artificial intelligence to bring images up to “a level compatible with 8K regardless of the original source quality”. How well that works is hard to say. And no, Samsung isn’t just throwing around the word AI as a buzzword (okay maybe a little), as it actually features a dedicated processor that uses AI to help ensure the best possible upscaling experience.

In an age where some aren’t even sure if 4K is worth buying, what do you think of the prospect of 8K TV? We’ll be sure to get even more hands-on time with the Samsung Q900R in the weeks and months to come.
