LIFX has been promising to bring Apple HomeKit compatibility to its smart lightbulbs for a while now, and we’re happy to say that day is finally here. Version 3.8.1 of the LIFX app, which began rolling out this morning, brings Apple HomeKit support to a number of current-generation LIFX bulbs.
Not all bulbs are created equal: If you happen to own first- or second-gen LIFX bulbs (LIFX White 800, Color 1000), we’re sorry to say this update isn’t for you. These older bulbs don’t work because they don’t include HomeKit’s MiFi chip. The LIFX Z color-changing light strip isn’t compatible, either.
So, what bulbs are compatible? Only third-generation bulbs are compatible. That means if you own a third-gen LIFX, LIFX GU10, LIFX Downlight, or LIFX+ bulb, you’ll be able to take advantage of HomeKit compatibility starting today.
How to set it up: First, you’ll need to open the LIFX app, follow the prompts, and upgrade each bulb to the HomeKit-enabled firmware. Save or print your HomeKit Code, as you’ll need this for the next step. Then, pair with HomeKit automatically in the LIFX app, or any time later in the Home app.
Keeping up with the competition: LIFX adding HomeKit support means it’s now compatible with all three major voice assistant platforms — Google Assistant, Siri, and Alexa. Philips Hue and Sylvania have already added Siri support to their devices, so it’s nice to see LIFX keeping up with its competitors.
