How to use iTunes for Chromebook

Chromebooks have continued to evolve as an affordable alternative to most laptops without a lot of the limitations of tablets. But they still have their quirks and drawbacks. For one, you can’t download iTunes for Chromebook, which is sure to annoy a few users making the leap from a MacBook or Windows laptop. And beware of plugins or apps promising to do it for you, because nothing official has come out of Apple here.

Having said that, you don’t have to replace your whole music collection just because you got a Chromebook. There are workarounds that give you access to your iTunes library on Chromebook, and don’t involve needing to learn Linux and tricks.

In short, you’ll want to import your iTunes library into Google Play and follow a few simple steps, as this guide to using iTunes on Chromebook shows best.

Install Google Play

  • You’ll be prompted with the option to select your favorite artists. Click on Finish when you’re ready.

Once you’re all done, you’ll be redirected to the Google Play Music home page.

Import your iTunes library

Now it’s time to move all your music over to your Chromebook. First, you’ll want to open up the Mac or PC where you keep your iTunes music. Make sure you have Chrome installed, because you’ll need it.

First, download the Google Play Music app:

  • Open Chrome.
  • Go to Google Play Music in your webstore.
  • Click on Add to Chrome in the top-right corner.
  • Click on Add App to confirm.

  • Open the Google Play Music web interface in Chrome.
  • Click on the menu in the top left corner of the screen (three horizontal bars).
  • Click on Upload Music.

Now you’ll have the option to drag music into the app.

If you’re using Windows, here’s how to access your iTunes music: Users > [your username] > Music > iTunes > iTunes Media > Music.

For Apple users: Users > [your username] > Music > iTunes.

Select the music you want to upload from here. It may take a while if you’ve got a lot of music, so be patient.

Wrap up

That’s all there is to it. You can now access iTunes for Chromebook — sort of.

When you return to your Chromebook and open the Google Play Music app, you’ll be able to access the music you just imported from iTunes to Google Play Music.
