The best Smart coffee makers – what are your options?

Let’s face it, a good portion of the world is addicted to coffee. If you’re like me, you probably get up in the morning and need a couple of cups before you feel completely primed and ready for the day. With the advent of the Internet of Things, it was only a matter of time before our coffee makers moved towards being smart as well.

There are quite a few smart coffee makers that have hit the market already, but what exactly is a smart coffee maker? For that matter, what about smart coffee makers make them worth buying? Good question.

What makes a coffee maker smart?

In essence anything that’s connected to the Internet is a smart coffee maker. The functionality this connection provides will range from maker to maker, with some options offering simple apps that merely let you start brewing remotely on demand or via a timer. Others get more complicated letting you pick when to start presoaking beans and much more. Bottom-line, smart coffee makers are designed to brew higher quality cups of Joe while giving you more control over the process.

With that out of the way, let’s dive in and take a look at the best coffee makers you can buy.

Illy Y5 Iperespresso

Smart coffee makers Illy

The Illy Y5 Iperespresso is one of the many smart coffee makers that uses a capsule formula, with owners buying packs of single-serve containers that are designed to go inside the machine to quickly brew up some coffee and espresso in the morning. The Illy Y5 Iperespresso itself is very sleek looking, witb an adjustable cup tray that can fit both small cups and larger coffee mugs.

This machine can be controlled by an app, which supports  iOS and Android smartphones. You can use the app to schedule a time for your coffee to be brewed, and you can also customise your coffee or expresso cup serving. The app can then send you a notification when the time comes for your morning (or afternoon or evening) treat. You just press on the “brew” button on the app to begin the process and presto: your coffee is ready for you to get out of bed to start drinking.

The Illy Y5 Iperespresso is available for $299.99. If your order it from Amazon, you can also sign up for the coffee maker’s Amazon Dash program. This gives you an option for the machine to automatically order new single-serve containers from the retailer for you when it senses you are running low on capsules, so in theory you should never run out of them.

Smarter Coffee (2nd Gen)

Smart coffee makers - Smarter coffee

The Smarter Coffee company recently launched the second generation version of its machine, and it’s packed with connected options. You might not know that, however, upon your first look; the machine looks like an old-fashioned coffee maker, with a big glass carafe sitting on a warming plate. It collects the coffee that comes from the bean container on top that grinds down the beans, adds hot water and sends it down to the carafe.

However, the second gen Smarter Coffee machine is anything but old-fashioned on the inside. You can control it with the dedicated smartphone app for iOS and Android devices. The app allows you to control when the brewing process begins, and many cups of coffee should be put in the carafe. You can use the app to change the strength of the coffee coming out of the machine, and you can pick either filtered or freshly ground options. The app even shows you how much water is left in the machine.

Not only can you control the Smarter Coffee machine with your smartphone, you can also connect it to your Amazon Echo smart speaker, via a native Alexa skill. You can then just say, “Turn on the kettle” to get the process going. This machine also works with the Google Home speaker, or you can use the machine’s IFTTT support so you can connect it to other supported smart home devices. This coffee maker is available now for $249.99 on Amazon.

Bonaverde Berlin

Smart coffee makers - Berlin

The Bonaverde Berlin, which first got started as a Kickstarter campaign in 2013 before actually launching in 2017, is more than just a coffee maker. In fact, it’s more than just a smart coffee machine. This is the first such machine ever made that actually roasts coffee beans before grinding them, so when your coffee actually comes out, your cup should be about as fresh as you can get.

The machine will only work with its own packages of coffee, which is where the “smart” part of this device comes in. The packages come with RFID tags inside, which are supposed to send the actual roasting information to the Bonaverde Berlin by holding those packages in front of the machine’s scan pad.

In addition to the RFID tags in the coffee packages, owners of this machine can also use Facebook Messenger on their phone to contact the company’s  Bonaverde Coffee Concierge. You can use it to schedule when you start your next roast, order more coffee packages and more. The bad news is that the Bonaverde Berlin is highly expensive. Amazon is selling it for $1,187, and each coffee package can be between $11 and $15.

Behmor Connected

smart coffee maker

The Behmor Connected is a coffee maker for those who are more worried about quality over speed. You’re able to control this unit with your smartphone over Wi-Fi and can set the exact temperature you would like to brew your coffee at. This coffee maker is also different than others in the fact that you can soak your beans for a specified time before actually brewing it. In this way, you can brew your coffee exactly how you like, and can make it very similar to how you might see it made in a coffee shop.

The pot is rated to make 8 cups of coffee, and is made with double walled stainless steel to keep your coffee hot for hours. The container uses a brew-through lid so heat is kept in the pot during brewing, and the stainless steel water heater is great for retaining warmth.

You can pick up the Behmor Connected coffee maker for $189.95 at the time of writing.

Orenda Smart Coffee Maker

smart coffee makers

The Orenda is probably one of the smartest and most versatile coffee makers on the market. It allows you to set special brewing instructions for different types of coffee, and can even set timers to always make a fresh cup when you need it.

You can help the coffee maker learn the type of brews you like through the included app, and it will automatically adjust settings over time the more you brew. You can make all different types of coffee based on your settings in this app, so you won’t be restricted to regular hot coffee if you want something like cold-brew instead.

The Orenda comes with a guide wall which breaks the brew container into 3 separate compartments. With this, you’re able to make up to 3 different types of coffee at a time, meaning everyone can get their perfect cup whenever they like.

The Orenda is currently available for pre-order, and will be launching in August of this year. If you order now the company will give you a $100 discount on its price of $399, so be sure to jump on it quick if you think this is the best coffee maker for your needs.

Nespresso D70 Prodigio Espresso Maker

If you’re someone who likes to enjoy a cup of espresso on the fly and also wants the precision and control of a connected coffee maker, the Nespresso D70 might be for you.

The Nespresso D70 uses a high pressure pump and heat control system to get you consistent results, and the high temperature is great at keeping the flavor extracted every single time. Nespresso says you can heat the water in just 25 seconds.

You can set various brew sizes depending on how strong you like your coffee, and the automatic capsule ejection makes it so you don’t have to worry about your pods every single time. The app allows you to manage your pod stock, and you can set up a credit card so you can order more pods when you get low. If you’re part of the Nespresso Club, you can receive technical diagnosis of your machine 24/7. If your machine breaks during the guarantee period, Nespresso will come out to your home and give you a loaner machine until yours is fixed.

This machine blends quality with speed pretty darn well, so if you want quality and support fast, this is worth a look.

Brewgenie Smart Coffee Maker

Smart coffee makers don’t have to be expensive. The Brewgenie Smart Coffee Maker has many of the same abilities as more expensive options on the list, but at a much more affordable price. For $49.99 you’re getting brewing reminders, water recognition to prevent overheating, and it lets you know when you need to purchase more coffee.

The app is extremely simplistic and included a number of toggles to help you configure your machine. You can ask for notifications and tell your machine to keep warm or turn off, so you should be able to make your coffee how you like every single day.

Sure, this thing doesn’t have all the intricate features of some of the more expensive models, but it will likely do everything you need it to while saving a pretty noticeable chunk of change.
