9 best RPGs for PS Vita

The PS Vita has been around for a while and in 2020, despite being one of the most popular handheld systems of all time finding new and old games is getting pretty rare these days. The RPG genre is ever popular, but it isn’t quite as robust on the PS Vita as it is on other handheld consoles but we’ve found gems here and there that are definitely worth playing. Here are the best RPGs for the PS Vita!

Atelier games

Atelier is a series of RPGs. They have made appearances on the PS3, PS4, and PS Vita. There are a couple of games for the latter. They are Atelier Firis: The Aclhemist and the Mysterious Journey and Atelier Rorona: The Alchemist of Arland. Both games have their own set of game play mechanics. However, they both revolve around a central idea. Each game has story line tasks. The tasks are to be complete within a certain time limit or it’s game over. The player can then roam around the game as they please. You can pick up both games on Amazon for $39.99. At least, that’s the price for a PS Vita digital code.

Child of Light
Price: $19.79

Child of Light is one of the lighter RPGs. It utilizes side-scrolling mechanics. You’ll also get some gorgeous environments to trek through. It sticks to the basics really well. You play as a girl along with a firefly companion named Igniculus. You are to save the world of Lemuria from evil and certain destruction. There are a couple of companions to gain through the course of the game. Additionally, there are side quests to endear you to the people of the world. The combat is your standard jRPG fair. There is also an interruption mechanic that lets you interrupt attacks as long as your attack is faster. It goes for a very reasonable $19.79 on Amazon.

Dragon's Crown
Price: $29.99
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Dragon’s Crown is one of the more unique RPGs on the list. It’s an action RPG title. That means you’ll be hacking and slashing your way through bad guys to gain experience and other things. The actual game play is similar to arcade style beat-em-ups. Your role will be to explore various labyrinths to find the legendary Dragon’s Crown relic. It has some of the better multiplayer options as well. It features local multiplayer with other PS Vitas. You can also transfer save data from the PS Vita to the PS3 version and vice versa. You can even play between the consoles online. We know that not many people still own a PS3, but that’s still kind of cool. The game runs for $29.99 on Amazon.

Final Fantasy X and X-2
Price: $22.95
BUY IT ON AMAZON!
Final Fantasy X was one of the most iconic RPGs ever. Final Fantasy X-2 wasn’t nearly as good. It doesn’t really matter though because these two games come as a package. They are exactly like the originals with better graphics. You’ll join Tidus on his adventure with Yuna through the world of Spira. Your goal is to defeat Sin. You’ll have a colorful set of characters along with plenty of other stuff to help you accomplish the task. It features a large game world, plenty of side quests, and one of the better video game soundtracks out there. Final Fantasy X-2 takes place soon after the events of Final Fantasy X. It was nice of Square Enix to bring both titles along for the ride.

Muramasa Rebirth
Price: $25.42
BUY IT ON AMAZON!
Muramasa Rebirth is another 2D, side-scrolling RPG. The game almost plays like a platform-runner style of game. You’ll run around 2D environments and hack and slash the bad guys. It also features random encounters that you can avoid if you want to. The story goes that two warriors are looking for the Demon Sword. Your job is to get it. This version has a bit of content cut out from the original. The developers made up for it by adding four standalone stories as DLC. The story is pretty decent. However, the action packed game play is really where it’s at with this one. It’s also relatively inexpensive on both Amazon and PSN.

Persona 4 Golden
Price: $19.99
BUY IT ON AMAZON!
Persona 4 Golden is a port of the original Persona 4 from the PlayStation 2. This version is expanded from its original and includes a new character and other content. That’s a pretty decent RPG franchise. Persona 4 blends RPG and simulation elements. You play as a character living out his regular life. You transport into and out of another world where there are dungeons, monsters, and other things to do. In the real world, your goal is to build relationships with people. That unlocks more powerful Personas for use in the other world. The dungeons generate randomly and change depending on the objective of the quest. The actual combat is turn-by-turn like you see in many jRPGs. It's pretty good and there are other Persona games on Vita as well.

Ragnarok Odyssey Ace
Price: $19.99
BUY IT ON PSN!
Ragnarok Odyssey Ace is actually an update from a prior game. It has all of the stuff from the regular Ragnarok Odyssey but it also includes all of the DLC. The game uses a real-time, action RPG style of combat. It doesn’t have a leveling system, though. Instead, players equip cards that improve stats and add abilities. New gear allows you to equip more cards for more stat boosts. The game has six classes. Each class has their own set of cards that add special abilities. The story isn’t amazing, but it’s good enough to move the story forward without being too tedious. This game is difficult to find for a good price on Amazon. You should probably grab this as a digital download on PSN for $19.99.

World of Final Fantasy
Price: $24.97
BUY IT ON AMAZON!
World of Final Fantasy is one of the newer RPGs on PS Vita. Despite how new it is, the game plays like an earlier Final Fantasy. That includes a return of the ATB system popularized by the RPG series. They added some extra stuff to the combat to make it feel a little more refreshed. You’ll play as Lann and Reynn, a brother and sister duo who’s personalities mesh very well in the game. The game also has the players traveling to various worlds from the Final Fantasy series. That means there are cameos from some of the series’ biggest characters. It’s a bit of a fan service nod to long time fans. At least it’s also a decent RPG. It runs for about $25 on Amazon these days.

Ys: Memories of Celceta
Price: $19.99
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Ys: Memories of Celceta is one of two Ys games on PS Vita. We’d tell you to buy the other one, but it doesn’t come out until September 2017. The game play in this RPG is similar to the other titles in the series. It features action RPG, real-time combat with a fighting game style. You’ll have your standard attack as normal. However, you have to press various buttons in the correct succession to achieve special moves. The plot is part of the larger Ys universe. It rests between Ys II and Ys: The Oath of Felghana. You won’t need to know those games to enjoy this one. However, there will be some nods to the other games that you might miss.
