5 best find my phone apps for iPhone and iPad

Losing your phone is a terrifying experience. These things are expensive and they hold all kinds of personal data. They’re simply not something you want lost for any amount of time. However, there are a variety of things that you can do in order to get it back. iPhones and iPads have a few fairly decent options. Let’s talk about some decent find my phone apps for iPhone and iPad. Please note that none of these do as well as Apple’s iCloud experience, but they do, in fact, work.

iCloud
Price: Free / $0.99-$9.99 per month
CHECK IT OUT ON APPLE.COM
Apple has a decent system for lost iPhones and iPads. It works directly with your iCloud account. Owners can track their iPhone or iPad on iCloud.com. The app is also capable of playing sounds for when you get close or lock down your iPhone entirely if you can't get close to it. Worst case, you can erase the iPhone or iPad to preserve your personal data. To be honest, this is probably the best app for this. There are other apps that can find an iPhone. However, Apple has a bit of an advantage over third party apps because, well, they made the phone. The phone finder stuff is free. iCloud charges for cloud storage only.

If Found Lock Screen 2
Price: $0.99
DOWNLOAD FROM ITUNES
If Found Lock Screen 2 is a nifty and somewhat effective app for phone recovery. It puts your contact details on the lock screen. That's really it, honestly. You add your contact details, including email, iMessage details, or other messaging names or numbers. It makes it easy to find you in case a good Samaritan finds your iPhone. The app works with iPhone, iPad, and iPod. It's also relatively inexpensive and lightly customizable. The instructions are a little rough, but it's otherwise a solid app.

iHound
Price: Free
DOWNLOAD FROM ITUNES
iHound is a decent third party option for businesses. It's mostly for tracking fleet cars and things like that. However, it works by tracking iPhones as well. You can track an iPhone from a dashboard with enough accuracy to find a lost one. We probably wouldn't recommend this to most people. iCloud does this better and has more features for individual devices. However, iHound isn't a bad way to go if you have a team of people with company iPhones as long as you tell them, of course. It has features mostly for business use and it only works with iPhone.

Phone Tracker
Price: Free / Varies
DOWNLOAD FROM ITUNES
Phone Tracker is an older app for finding phones. It's a lot like a consumer verison of iHound. You can track up to two iPhones for free. It's usable for your own phone, your kids, or your employees. The app shows location as well as a location history of up to 72 hours. It doesn't do much else aside from simple tracking. Thus, if you want something to erase or lock your phone, we recommend going with Apple's iCloud. This does work as a simple option for iPhone tracking, though. It's free as long as it's just for two or fewer devices. It also works with iPad.

Prey
Price: Free / $54.99 per year
DOWNLOAD ON ITUNES
Prey is probably the only phone tracker app we would recommend as much as iCloud. It has a variety of features for both security and phone finding. That includes GPS tracking, geocaching, a device alarm, and message alerts. It can't wipe the device like iCloud, but it can do basically anything else. The app even disguises itself so that thieves don't disable it. It's an effective solution and it's also fairly easy to use. Our only critiques are that it doesn't do quite as much as iCloud. However, Apple has a bit of an advantage when it comes to things like device wiping.
