10 best antivirus apps for Windows 10, 8, and 7

Everybody knows what antivirus apps do. They protect from malware, viruses, and phishing scams. Antivirus apps usually run in the background and keep an eye on what you’re doing. However, there is also a lot of misinformation about these things. Frankly, they all do about the same thing. Also, no one is completely immune to Internet threats. There is always an element of common sense when it comes to computer safety. In any case, the various options do have some differences. Here are the best antivirus apps for Windows 10, 8, and 7.

Avast / AVG
Price: Free / $119.99 / $69.99 per year
DOWNLOAD FROM AVAST
Avast and AVG are big names in the antivirus space. They are also the same company, basically. Avast purchased AVG back in 2016 for $1.3 billion. Anyway, both of these antivirus apps are pretty decent. That includes basics like quick scans, system scans, browser protection, anti-malware features, anti-phishing features, and all of that. It also helps prevent ransomware, keeps an eye on your webcam, and a data shredder feature for security. The UI is fine and easy enough, although there is a bit of a learning curve. It's also fairly expensive whether you go for the subscription route or the single purchase route. They are on the heavier side and we don't recommend them for computers with lower-end specs.

Avira
Price: Free / $57.99-$99.99 per year
DOWNLOAD FROM AVIRA
Avira is another popular and heavier option for antivirus apps on Windows. This one comes with the basics along with some extra useful stuff. That includes a VPN, the usual antivirus stuff, an Android app, Avira has three levels of protection. The free version includes basic protection from stuff like phishing, viruses, ransomware, and it has scans along with a 500MB per month VPN. The $57.99 per year subscription adds device control, security for shopping and banking, and some other stuff. The $99.99 version adds unlimited VPN, firewall management, and some other stuff. It's not has heavy as AVG or Avast, but it's still fairly heavy.

Bitdefender
Price: Free / $39.98-$54.99 per year
DOWNLOAD FROM BITDEFENDER
Bitdefender is a fairly popular option. It has one of the lightest, but most effective free versions of any antivirus. It includes anti-phishing protection, anti-fraud protection, and the usual antivirus and anti-malware stuff. They have a premium verison, of course, and it's less expensive than many of its competitors. It comes with all the same stuff as the free version as well as a VPN, a password manager, a file shredder for more secure file deletion, a firewall, and a bunch of other stuff. It's not the lightest option ever, but it's definitely not going to tax your resources like some others do. Or rather, it shouldn't.

Glasswire
Price: Free / $39-$99
DOWNLOAD FROM GLASSWIRE
Glasswire isn't an antivirus app at all. However, it is an excellent security app. It basically gives you a look at what your computer does. That includes bandwidth monitoring, evil twin detection, alerts, and more. You can basically see everything that you computer does when it's connected to the Internet. You get a nice graph along with history to see past events. It won't kill a virus for you. However, this with Windows Defender isn't a half bad one-two combo if you don't want a third party antivirus app. The prices vary, but you do get more features with more money.

Google Chrome
Price: Free
DOWNLOAD FROM GOOGLE
Believe it or not, Google Chrome has a lot of protection built-in. It is extremely sensitive to websites without proper certificates, sites that don't use HTTPS, and sites that have been previously linked to phishing scams. It doesn't save you from every potential threat. However, it does a lot better than most other browsers in this regard. Plus, it also includes syncing between your computer and your smartphone along with a fairly robust password manager. Google is hardcore paranoid about security, though, and that can definitely keep you safe from some nasty stuff.

Kaspersky
Price: Free / $39.99-$149.99 per year
DOWNLOAD FROM KASPERSKY
Kaspersky is another big name in antivirus apps. This one has a free version and a premium version. The free version does the basic stuff like protect against phishing, scan your system, and other common stuff like that. The premium version adds more devices, more protection against stuff like malware, and online protection for stuff like shopping. There is a final tier that also adds a kid mode, a password manager, and file protection. The free version is okay if you want something light that does the basics. The premium version gets rather expensive, but it's also only moderately heavy. This is a good one for people who want better targeted protection as opposed to blanket protection like AVG, Norton, or others.

Malwarebytes
Price: Free / $40-$90 per year
DOWNLOAD FROM MALWAREBYTES
Malwarebytes is one of the most popular antivirus apps for Windows. That's probably because it has one of the best free antivirus apps of any company on this list. The free version comes with basic stuff like scanning, threat removal, and more. The premium version adds web browsing protection, ransomware protection, and various other preventative measures. For $40 you get a license for a single computer while the $90 option is for up to ten total devices. The $90 option also lets you use your subscription on your Android, Mac, or Windows devices. The free version is probably the lightest option of anything on this list. You can get more for your money if you go premium, but Malwarebytes has an exceptionally good reputation for being really good at this.

Sophos
Price: Free / $50 per year
DOWNLOAD FROM SOPHOS
Sophos isn't kidding around. This is antivirus for the hardcore. Their enterprise solutions are extremely powerful and also extremely expensive. We don't recommend that to someone shopping for an antivirus on their home PC. However, they do have simpler antivirus apps for Windows, Mac, and other platforms. The free version includes a real-time antivirus scanner, a parental filter mode, web protection, remote management, and more. For $50 per year, you get better real-time protection, ransomware protection, banking protection, malware removal tools, and more. This is surprisingly good for not being one of the bigger brands and their free version is utterly delightful.

VirusTotal.com
Price: Free
CHECK OUT VIRUSTOTAL HERE
VirusTotal.com is one of the most interesting antivirus tools on the Internet. It's actually a website so there is nothing to download. Instead, you can upload installers to the website and get an analysis. It's super easy, you just click and drag the installer file to the website. It then tells you what all of the other antivirus apps think about it. It doesn't provide stuff like real-time protection or anything like that. However, you can check everything you download before you install it. It does give the occasional false positive, but better safe than sorry.

Windows Defender

CHECK IT OUT ON MICROSOFT.COM
It's a little cheesy to recommend Windows' own antivirus, but hear us out. Windows Defender has improved immensely since the release of Windows 10. It integrates directly with Windows Firewall. Additionally, it performs regular scans, gets regular updates, and it doesn't really take up that many system resources. That's not half bad for it being completely free. However, most of its newer features and better performance is restricted to newer versions of Windows. We probably wouldn't recommend this to someone running Windows 7, but those on Windows 10 may be able to skip buying extra protection and just use this, Google Chrome, Glasswire, and a little common sense.
