15 best antivirus apps for almost every platform!

Antivirus apps and anti-malware apps are kind of a necessary evil. Many platforms don’t usually need them these days. Most people can get by with a little common sense and whatever comes stock on their devices. However, there are millions of people who want more protection than that just to be on the safe side. Antivirus apps can keep away attackers, prevent incidents like ransomware, and tighten up security while browsing. There are a ton of options on most available platforms. We can help with that. Here are the best antivirus apps for almost every current platform!

Antivirus apps for Windows 10, 8, and 7

Bitdefender
Price: Free / $39.98-$54.99 per year
DOWNLOAD FROM BITDEFENDER
Bitdefender is a popular antivirus app on Windows. It should work with Windows 10, 8, and 7 as well. There are two versions of this one. The free variant includes anti-phishing and anti-fraud features along with the usual virus and malware scanning. You can add a VPN, a password manager, and a file shredder option for data destruction, a firewall, and some other stuff for a yearly subscription. It covers all of the bases and generally scores well on antivirus tests by third parties. It's not a light option by any stretch. However, it shouldn't tax your system as much as heavier options like Norton, AVG, or other similar antivirus apps.

Malwarebytes
Price: Free / $40-$90 per year
DOWNLOAD FROM MALWAREBYTES
Malwarebytes is one of the most popular antivirus and anti-malware apps on Windows. The free version is super light and only does the basics. That basically includes scanning for and removing malware. There is a full version that costs $40 per year. That option adds web browsing protection, ransomware protection, and more advanced antivirus scanning. There is also a $90 per year option that works with up to ten devices. The free version of this runs in the background to a point where you will probably never notice its existence. Additionally, it tends to score very well on most tests.

Windows Defender is a lot better than it used to be. It integrates directly with a lot of the default security options on Windows 10, including Windows Firewall. Additionally, it gets regular and frequent updates. Everybody running Windows 10 has seen Defender in action and it really doesn't take up a ton of system resources either, although the notifications are a little annoying. This isn't the same hacked together nonsense we saw in Windows 7 or even Windows 8. This, along with a more secure browser like Google Chrome and free tools like VirusTotal.com or Malwarebytes and that should do well enough for just about everybody. All of those options are free, too.

Antivirus apps for Mac

Avast or AVG
Price: Free / $59.99 per year
DOWNLOAD FROM AVAST
Avast bought AVG in 2016. Thus, we put them together on this list. Both of them have decent selections, free options, and somewhat reasonable pricing. Some of the features include the usual things like system scans and web browser protection. They also come with ransomware prevention, anti-malware functionality, and more. The premium versions also come with more features, but the trade off is the heavier package. That may not be great for older Macs with low RAM or older CPUs. We recommend the free versions of these antivirus apps for now.

Kaspersky
Price: Free / $19.99-$49.99 per year
DOWNLOAD FROM KASPERSKY
Kaspersky is another big name in the antivirus game. This is also available for Windows as well as Mac. In any case, Kaspersky routinely scores well on antivirus tests and it's cheaper than most of its competitors. The free version is a bit too light for us. Bitdefender, Avast, AVG, and Malwarebytes all have better free versions for Mac. However, the pro version adds banking protection, advanced system scans, and more. There are more expensive tiers that add more stuff. However, it's probably overkill for most people unless you have kids. The $19.99 per year option is the version of Kaspesrsky we would recommend. It's the best value.

Sophos
Price: Free / $50 per year
DOWNLOAD FROM SOPHOS
Sophos isn't joking around when it comes to antivirus protection. Its enterprise options are extremely powerful. They also have versions for personal computers as well. The free version of this app for Mac is actually fantastic. It's light, powerful, and includes features such as real-time protection, remote management, web browsing protection, and parental controls. The premium version is competitively priced at $50 per year. It adds ransomware protection, better customer support, and some additional privacy protection features. It's good for its price, but the free version is easily the best free antivirus app for Mac.

Antivirus apps for Linux

ClamAV
Price: Free
DOWNLOAD FROM CLAMAV
ClamAV is a popular and open source antivirus app for Linux. It's available for a number of distros, including Ubuntu, Debian, SuSE, RedHat, Fedora, Mandriva, Gentoo, and a few others. That alone makes it a popular option in this space. The app includes a command line scanner for the super hardcore user. Additionally, it also includes support for basically every file type. That means it can scan anything and compare it to a database of potential risks. The database gets frequent updates as well. This one is entirely free with no subscriptions or anything like that.

Snort
Price: Free / $29.99 per year
DOWNLOAD FROM SNORT
Snort is something a little different. It doesn't protect you from viruses or malware in the traditional sense. Instead, it monitors all Internet traffic to and from your computer. From there, you can identify all kinds of attacks, probes, or other potential threats to your system. Some of the features include real-time traffic analysis, packet logging, protocol analysis, and some other neat tools. This one is fairly complicated. We only recommend it to those who know what to look for or are willing to learn. The subscription option adds some goodies, but you get 90% of the app for free. It's available for Fedora, CentOS, and FreeBSD natively. The source code lets you use it almost anywhere, though.

A more secure Linux distro
Price: Free
DOWNLOAD TAILS OS
Leave it to Linux to have a real, actual solution like this. There are distributions of Linux with tons of extra security. Some popular options include Tails (linked above), Whonix, Qubes OS, and Subgraph OS. They are usually based on popular distros like Debian or Fedora. Thus, you get decent application support along with the improved security. The configurations and added tools make it much more difficult for attackers to get to you. Of course, this requires a whole operating system installation and that's fairly tedious. Plus, these don't protect from everything. It's a super neat idea, though, and it does work pretty well for most things.

Antivirus apps for iPhone and iPad

Safari
Price: Free
CHECK IT OUT ON APPLE.COM!
Safari is actually a fairly secure browser. It prevents a lot of problematic things on the web. That includes blocking dangerous URLs and phishing scams before they happen most of the time. Most antivirus apps have a database of dangerous URLs for their browsing protection. Safari very likely has access to the same one. Just using this on your iPhone or iPad gives you fairly stable browsing protection. Plus, it's already on your device, it's free, and it actually works pretty well.

Sophos
Price: Free
DOWNLOAD ON ITUNES
We don't like putting the same product on a list twice, but Sophos earns an exception to the rule. Antivirus apps on iOS are usually ineffective because the system is so closed down that apps simply can't gain enough access to be dangerous. That means they don't have enough access to give you much protection either. Sophos seems to understand this and their antivirus app works differently than most. The features include browsing protection, password management, multi-factor authentication, and some WiFi security features. You know, the stuff that antivirus apps can actually do on iOS. Plus, Sophos is entirely free here and that makes it the best mobile security app on the platform. There is also an Android version and it's outstanding as well.

TunnelBear VPN
Price: Free / $3.99 per month / $29.99 per year
DOWNLOAD ON ITUNES
TunnelBear is one of many good VPNs on iPhone and iPad. We just like this one better than most. It offers 500MB of free data per month. That's more than enough to check your email or respond to a message on the airport's public WiFi. Subscription tiers are dirt cheap compared to competitors as well. The app itself features AES-256 bit encryption, a global VPN network, a strict no logging policy, and a simple UI. You don't need protection from hackers if they can't see you to begin with, right? You should always have a VPN when surfing on public WiFi. TunnelBear is as good as it gets on iOS in our humble opinion.

Antivirus apps for Android

CM Security Lite
Price: Free
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
We don't usually recommend Cheetah Mobile apps. Their cleaner apps are useless and actually make your device run worse. However, their antivirus app actually isn't half bad. It's a super simple and free option. It basically scans your device and then sits there and does nothing. It works on external SD cards and you can schedule scans as well. That's about all this app does. It's good for lower end devices without a ton of system resources. The app is also good for those who want something that doesn't run in the background and gum up the works. It's entirely free as far as we can tell.

TrustGo is another rare and free antivirus app on Android. This one has a laundry list of features. They include a data backup option, full antivirus and anti-malware scans, an app lock, web browsing protection, and even an anti-theft mode for phones. This one checks a lot of boxes for not that much money. There are some features you won't need, like an app manager. Your settings menu does a better job of that than any app would. The system manager is good with showing your resources, but we definitely don't recommend using it to shut down running apps. Cleaner apps simply don't work that well. TrustGo is otherwise an excellent antivirus app.

Google Play Protect is Android's native app protection. It works as a part of Google Play and it's always on your device in the background. It scans apps, compares them to the Google Play Store version, and ensures that nothing untoward is happening. It's completely free and you don't have to do anything in order to use it. Plus, it hooks directly into the Google Play Store where you should be getting all of your apps anyway. Thus, if an app on Google Play is having an issue, Play Protect can remove it immediately from your device before it causes harm. You can hit the button above to learn more about Google Play Protect.
