These are the best TV shows on Amazon Prime Video

While not as popular as Netflix or Hulu, Amazon Prime Video has grown into a major force in streaming TV. The fact that any member of Amazon Prime can use the service as part of their subscription means it has a potentially huge audience for its original shows. While the retailer has never revealed any concrete subscriber numbers for Amazon Prime, some believe as many as 85 million people have signed up for it. There are several Amazon series that are currently available and we think many of them are worth sharing.

Be aware that Amazon Prime Video has a number of other original shows in the works, and we will update this post when new and cool shows show up on the service.

Sons of Anarchy

Sons of Anarchy takes you through the story of SAMCRO, a California-based motorcycle club full of “Harley enthusiasts and mechanics”. The story has it all; deceit, betrayal, crime, murder and of course… sex.

The main protagonist, Jax Teller is trying to take his club’s long history of crime and give it a different future. One with less bloodshed and an honest source of income. Old habits die hard, though, especially when enemies keep showing up, and even emerging from the very same club.

Doctor Who

First launched in 1963, Doctor Who is one of the most popular science fiction series available. We are sure you have seen those police boxes at some point in your life.

The TV show ended in 1989, only to be revived in 2005. It is the new seasons you will be able to enjoy using Amazon Prime Video. And while the classics are not available, Doctor Who is still taking you through a quest in time, battling injustice.

He is an alien of great intelligence who has found a fascination with planet earth, which is why he is often seen collaborating with humans and even taking them along his trek. Join him and explore the galaxy through this TV show.

Flight of the Chonchords

This has got to be one of the funniest shows we have ever seen. In Flight of the Conchords, Jemaine and Bret are trying to make it as a 2-man band in New York. There is love, failure and plenty of laughs.

Their humor is witty and very different from what we have seen in other comedy series. The team has also found a way to seamlessly incorporate the main protagonists’ music throughout the show. Sometimes these are songs that talk about what is going on in the story, and it is also often their dialogue.

Just watch an episode… you will fall in love with the show.

The Man in the High Castle

Amazon series

Based on the classic novel by the late Phillip K. Dick, this show takes place in the 1960, but in an alternate timeline where Nazi Germany and Japan won World War II, and occupy the coasts of either side of the US. This “what if” series tells the tale of several characters in this alternate Earth, who discover a series of movies that show the US winning World War II.

The show has released two 10-episode seasons and it easily ranks among the best offerings on the service. A third season is in production and is slated to premiere on the streaming service in 2018 and is definitely a must watch Amazon series.

This hardboiled police show, based on novels from author Michael Connelly, stars Titus Welliver as Los Angeles Police detective Harry Bosch.  It can be a slow burn at times, but the first three seasons of this show are well worth checking out and is an excellent Amazon series.

Mozart In The Jungle

This comedy centers on members of the classical music scene in New York City and is highly entertaining. It was the surprise winner for Best Comedy TV Series at the 2016 Golden Globe awards. There are currently three seasons to check out on the service and a fourth season will premiere in March 2018. It’s one the best Amazon series and one of the best comedies around, period.

The Tick

There are no shortages of super-hero TV shows and movies, but Amazon Prime Video may have one of the best in The Tick. Based on the independent comic which focuses on the title character. He’s super strong and close to -invulnerable, but he isn’t exactly the smartest guy around. The first season is available to watch now. This is a slam dunk Amazon series for anyone looking for something a little different in the superhero genre.

Sneaky Pete

This show, from co-creators David Shore (House) and Bryan Cranston (yes, the one you’re thinking of), is very dark and different. It follows the life of an ex-convict who decides to take on the identity of Pete Murphy, his former cell mate, so he can avoid dealing with his own issues. If you like shows like Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul, then Sneaky Pete is worth a watch. You can watch the first Amazon series now, and its already been renewed for a second season.

The Marvelous Mrs Maisel

The most recent Amazon series could be the best one yet for the Amazon Prime Video service. It centers on a woman in New York City in the late 1950s who decides to become a stand-up comedian after her husband leaves her. The show has already won this year’s Golden Globe Award for Best TV Comedy, and its star, Rachel Brosnahan, also won the Golden Globe for best actress in a TV comedy.

Even though it’s labeled as a comedy, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel has a lot of drama as well, as you might expect from its creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, who also created Gilmore Girls. The first season is available now, and the second season is set to start in late 2018.

American Horror Story

Horror fans will have plenty to fear with American Horror Story, an scary show based on multiple locations and times. This is because every season displays a different type of horror story. The first revolves around a murder house, the second takes place in an asylum, and so on.

Just the intro makes me feel uneasy. Imagine what the rest of the show can do to the hairs in your arms. Take a blanket, turn off the lights and watch until you can’t fall asleep.

Murder and cannibalism. These concepts, paired with the title, may ring a bell. Yes, this show is based off Thomas Harris’ novels Red Dragon and Hannibal. It also shares the title with a popular film, which means many of you probably get the idea of what this TV series is all about.

It is all about a relationship between FBI profiler Will Graham and forensic psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter (who happens to be a cannibalistic murderer). The latter-mentioned character works from within to manipulate the FBI… until his relationship with Graham strengthens.

Best Amazon Series – Conclusion

This list isn’t exhaustive. There are other original shows on the streaming service that are worth your time, although some of them are only available for one season.

Amazon Prime Video has several interesting upcoming shows in the works as well, including a new series based on the Jack Ryan military thriller novels from Tom Clancy.
